Raising Low Total Alkalinity

Sodium bicarbonate (bicarbonate of soda), NaHCO3,  will raise the total alkalinity without excessively raising the pH. You should try to increase the total alkalinity over a period of time, adding a maximum of 500 gr of bicarb for each 22,000 litres (22m3) of water.  When the TA is too high, the following can occur:

  • pH keeps going up despite regular addition of pH-Minus or hydrochloric (muriatic) acid

  • cloudy water

  • burning eyes and itchy skin

  • reduced chlorine efficiency resulting in algae growth

  • Note: Do not add more than 4 Litres of Pool Acid per 40,000 Litres of water at one time. If the pool requires more than this, add the maximum amount then retest 12 hours later and make further adjustments.
